Does lemon juice make your hair lighter?

I'm dirty blonde and want to make my hair lighter does lemon juice do that? and does anyone have any tips like how long to leave it in, or how much? please answer only from experience. Also do i really have to go in the sun for it to work because it's cloudy out?
