Building my own PC for the first time! any tips?

I have a $1-2000 budget (but i am flexible with it) i am looking for a high quality gaming computer. I don't need name brand alien ware or what not, i am looking to build my own piece by piece to get the most bang for my buck. What would you guys recommend? or who/where i should go to learn more information on what im stepping into..
